About Blazing Star Prairie
The Blazing Star Prairie is a new 68-acre, publicly accessible preserve section on the southern end of the Greater Indiangrass Preserve, which is part of the larger Katy Prairie Preserve. Today, the Katy Prairie Preserve spans over 20,000 acres.
This preserve plays a critical role in flood mitigation, climate resilience, water quality improvement, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement for the Houston region. Blazing Star Prairie is a newly restored prairie, helping to reestablish a thriving ecosystem and haven for wildlife, while also creating opportunities for the community to engage through recreation, programming, and conservation education.
Blazing Star Prairie features:
54 acres of restored grasslands supporting native Texas plants and wildlife
14 acres of prairie pothole wetlands to provide habitat for waterfowl and other species
Trails and boardwalks under development - planned completion in winter 2026
Home to Texas’s First Certified Conservation Cemetery
Within this preserve, Blazing Star Sanctuary is a protected 7.5-acre natural burial ground. The sanctuary is Texas’s first-certified conservation cemetery. Designed as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional cemeteries, the sanctuary prioritizes sustainability by restoring habitat and avoiding chemicals, vaults, concrete markers, and embalming. This unique space aligns with the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s commitment to land preservation while offering a place of quiet reflection and connection to nature.
