Texas Grasslands and Savannas Initiative

On September 30th, 2025, we were notified by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service that our $25 million Regional Conservation Partnership Program award, which funded the Texas Grassland and Savannas Initiative, was rescinded.

Coastal Prairie Conservancy is actively seeking new funding sources to advance conservation projects that were ready to proceed before funding was lost. Our team is also evaluating future opportunities to reapply for RCPP funding.

Despite this loss of funding, the coalition of partners that make up the Texas Grassland and Savannas Initiative remains committed to helping landowners in the Texas Gulf Coast conserve their land. Please refer to our Additional Financial Resources section for alternative funding sources.

If you have questions or would like to discuss land conservation options for your property, please email info@coastalprairieconservancy.org.

The Texas Grasslands and Savannas Initiative is an regional initiative between the Coastal Prairie Conservancy and partners that provides funding to private landowners to permanently protect their lands through conservation easements, and provide funds to help land owners manage and enhance habitat on private lands.

This initiative, funded through an award from the National Resources Conservation Service, focuses on the Coastal Prairie and Post Oak Savanna ecoregions that are threatened by increased development. NRCS has announced an award of $25 million for this initiative and the Coastal Prairie Conservancy will be negotiating a Project Agreement in 2024 and anticipates funding will be available in 2025. It focuses on a 16-county region.

The program helps private landowners preserve essential grassland bird habitat and promote the presence of pollinators, enhancing the overall biodiversity of these vital ecosystems. Conserving these lands today means safeguarding the rich biodiversity and cultural legacy of Texas for tomorrow.
