Coastal Prairie Conservancy Youth Waterfowl Hunt
Join the Coastal Prairie Conservancy (CPC) and the Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) for a one-of-a-kind waterfowl hunting experience on the historic Katy Prairie Preserve! The coastal prairie provides vital wintering and stopover habitat for ducks and other migratory waterfowl traveling along the Central Flyway.
Located just west of Houston, this landscape of wetlands and agricultural fields attracts millions of birds each year—making it one of the premier destinations for waterfowl hunting in Texas.
Participants will hunt on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with additional time devoted to clay shooting, wildlife education, and field sessions led by biologists, game wardens, and conservation experts.
Come experience waterfowl hunting at its finest while learning more about the importance of conserving Texas’ iconic coastal prairie ecosystem.

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Seed Collecting Trip
Join the Coastal Prairie Conservancy to collect local prairie plant seeds! Volunteers work to collect seeds which support numerous conservation programs in southeast Texas, and no experience is necessary. These volunteer opportunities have a tremendous impact on regional conservation efforts, and volunteers are invited to visit prairies not generally open to the public.
Seed collecting is a leisurely way to enjoy the prairie and learn prairie plants. Walk with a companion in the prairie and run your hand up the appropriate seed head. Seeds that easily fall in your hand are ripe for collection.
All seeding collecting opportunities will be announced in the Coastal Prairie Conservancy's monthly newsletter, so please join our newsletter email list. A separate seed collecting email list will only be used for notification of an impromptu trip.

Holiday Open House
Join us for our Holiday Open House at the Indiangrass Preserve on Tuesday, December 30th from 10 AM to 1 PM. Enjoy nature hikes on our 3 miles of trails and more. December is a fantastic time to look for birds, and birding experts will be on hand to help visitors master the art of sighting and identification. Everyone can dipnet for mosquito fish and other aquatic creatures at our pond. Finally, you’ll make ‘foraged floral’ winter arrangements for you to make and take home to enjoy throughout the season!
Christmas Bird Count
Join the Coastal Prairie Conservancy (CPC) for our annual Christmas Bird Count! Held from sunrise to sunset each New Year’s Day, groups of volunteers visit CPC’s preserves to tally bird species and monitor population counts. This annual event, called the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), occurs across the globe and is the world’s longest-running wildlife survey, beginning in 1900! The CBC provides important insights into bird activity that are used year-round to support stewardship efforts.
If you have participated before, please contact your area leader directly. If you are new to the count or would like to switch areas, please contact Megan Ahlgren at cypresscreekcbc@gmail.com. Otherwise, please be at John Paul Landing Environmental Education Center (9950 Katy Hockley Rd, Cypress 77433) at 6 a.m. on Jan. 1, and we will assign you to an area then. If you live in the count circle and want to participate as a feeder watcher (we are especially looking for participants with hummingbird feeders), please let Megan know. All skill levels welcome. This count is traditionally held on New Year's Day.

Sandhill Crane Watch Party
Each winter, the Katy Prairie becomes home to flocks of birds fleeing cooler climates for the season. Join local birding enthusiasts to see one of the most charismatic of these species, the sandhill crane, come in to roost on the prairie for the evening. You also will see waterfowl and other birds! $20 registration fee.
Meet at 4:00 PM at the Indiangrass Preserve Field Office. The group will be leaving promptly at 4:15 PM. The cranes sometimes shift their roost sites a bit, so our guides will be scouting within a few days of the field trip to determine a good viewing location. Depending on where that is, we may be doing a bit of driving over field roads, but not rough ones (we can combine into vehicles best suited for this). Bring binoculars and camera and dress in camouflage or dark colors; a spotting scope could be helpful. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!

Mowotony Seed Collecting Trip

Removing invasive species
Maintaining trails and repairing preserve improvements
