In Town Volunteer Opportunities

Throughout the Houston region, volunteers participate in activities central to the success of our restoration and outreach programs. Our 9 Natives and Pocket Prairies initiatives offer participants a chance to improve habitat at community spaces and schools throughout our city.


Pocket Prairies

New! Whistlestop Pocket Prairie Restoration Days at Hermann Park - 2nd Fridays

A Coastal Prairie Conservancy & Hermann Park Conservancy joint project. Come and help us maintain “Whistlestop Pocket Prairie,” which was the first major pocket prairie in the greater Houston area!

When: monthly on the 2nd Friday, 8:30am -11:30am

Location: 6106 Hermann Park Drive - Meet at the boat kiosk. Park in Lot F, look for the bike rental station, and head straight up the concrete sidewalk towards the boat dock. Tools and gloves will be provided. Please bring a completed Hermann Park Volunteer waiver (extras will be on hand). Staff will meet you to sign in.

Native Prairies Association of Texas: School Pocket Prairies

Join the collaborative Pocket Prairies initiative with our partners at the Native Prairies Association of Texas! The Pocket Prairies education program is currently working with Lantrip Elementary in Houston ISD to build a Pocket Prairie on their campus.

9 Natives Garden at the Cockrell Butterfly Center

Join volunteers in caring for our 9 Natives Showcase Garden at the Houston Museum of Natural Science! Learn more about the program on the 9 Natives page!

Where: The 9 Natives Showcase Garden is located outside of the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the corner of Hermann Park Drive and San Jacinto Street.

When: Volunteer events are held on the Second Mondays each month – 9:00am-11:30am.

Who: All individuals are welcome to participate - no experience necessary.

What to bring: Hat, closed-toe shoes, and long pants.

Physical Requirements: Bending, kneeling, or sitting on the ground; some light lifting.

What to bring: Water in a reusable water bottle, garden gloves (the museum has disposable vinyl gloves), and any garden hand tools that you have such as pruners (or scissors), trowel, or tools for weeding. The Coastal Prairie Conservancy will also provide tools.
