Seed Collecting

Man collecting seeds in a field.

Please join us and enjoy mornings on the prairie, while collecting seeds of native prairie plants for use in the Coastal Prairie Seed Increase Program, restoration projects, city pocket prairies, and the Great Grow Out.

Seed collecting trips are scheduled throughout the year, but mostly in fall. Click the button below to view upcoming dates. To be placed on the Coastal Prairie Conservancy's seed collecting email list, please join our volunteer opportunities email list. Be sure to check the volunteer box and look out for our monthly volunteer newsletter in your inbox with announcements and information about seed collecting days.

No experience is necessary. Collectors are very welcome to take some seeds home to grow or share with friends; volunteers collecting for other organizations are also welcome.

Special 2024-2026 Project: Our Nursery and Stewardship Volunteers are 1) collecting seed, 2) growing out seedlings, and 3) planting 20,000 milkweed plants for Monarchs across the Katy Prairie as part of a special pollinator program! Join us in this exciting endeavor! Email Lan if you’d like to help scout for and collect milkweed seed. This is a great independent volunteer activity. We will be collecting milkweed during our seed collecting days as well.
