Cattle are carefully rotated across the ranch using regenerative grazing practices that build healthy soils, strengthen native vegetation and improve wildlife habitat. Grazing remains one of the Conservancy's most important stewardship tools.
-
Warren Lake, wetlands and native prairie provide habitat for quail, deer, waterfowl, shorebirds and many other prairie species throughout the year.
-
The ranch supports rare native species, including the federally endangered Texas Prairie Dawn, which grows on the Hockley Salt Dome within the preserve.
The Story of Warren Ranch Preserve
For more than 140 years, Warren Ranch has been a defining part of the Katy Prairie. Established in 1883 by John and Jane Warren, the ranch has been stewarded by seven generations of the Warren family while remaining a productive cattle operation.
Recognizing the ranch's exceptional conservation value, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy became the majority owner in 2004, partnering with the Warren family to permanently protect more than 6,000 acres of prairie, wetlands and working lands while keeping the ranch in production.
Today, Warren Ranch continues to demonstrate that ranching and conservation are lasting partners. Through regenerative grazing, invasive species management and long-term prairie stewardship, the landscape remains productive for agriculture while providing exceptional habitat for wildlife and preserving one of the Katy Prairie's oldest ranching traditions.
