September Volunteer Highlight: Ranger

Do you remember the first time you encountered the wild beauty of a natural landscape? These moments can remind us of our deeper connection to land conservation.

For Ranger, CPC Outreach Assistant and volunteer, five acres of land next to a cornfield near her childhood house provided the opportunity to forge a connection to the wild spaces. In the years since, many open spaces like the pasture near Ranger’s home have been converted to development as Houston steadily grows westward.

Ranger joined the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s volunteer team last year after being reminded of how much she enjoyed the coastal prairie during school trips to the Lawther-Deer Park Prairie. Her work and volunteer efforts with land conservation and nature education organizations over the past decade made it a natural fit! Ranger’s volunteer efforts on the prairie range from managing invasive species and maintaining the trail system to orienting new volunteers, and she especially loves the transformation happening at Shrike Prairie surrounding the Matt Cook Memorial Wildlife Viewing Platform at Warren Lake.

In less than a year, Ranger has become a critical part of the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s volunteer team, and she recommends you give it a try, too! Preserve Steward volunteer opportunities on Tuesday and Friday are a great option during the week, and she suggests Stewardship Saturday for a weekend volunteer event perfect for families and groups.

Thank you, Ranger, for your outstanding volunteering efforts on the coastal prairie!
