Seed Collecting at the Gerhart Prairie

  • Gerhart Prairie Iowa Colony, TX United States (map)

The Gerhart/Formosa Plastics Prairie is located halfway between Houston and Angleton along the west side of Highway 288 feeder road between CR 62 and CR 63. Mark Morgenstern of Morning Star Prairie Plants will be leading us onto the prairie.

  • Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

  • Google map

  • Please park along the two-way feeder road facing south, so you are on the correct side of the road.

  • Please bring a signed Formosa Plastics liability waiver if you have not already signed one for this year.

  • This prairie is very wet and rubber boots are advisable. Plant rescue is a possibility and more information will be available closer to event day.

General Instructions

  • Everyone is welcome!

  • Except for UH Coastal Center, you may collect for Coastal Prairie Conservancy, for any other non-profit organization, or for your own personal use.

  • Please bring water in a reusable bottle, pruners or scissors, a pen, and a bucket or a reusable grocery bag. Some supplies are available if needed.

  • Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt. We recommend you bring a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a snack for yourself, a camera, and binoculars, if you are a birder.

  • Paper bags for the seeds to be collected and water refills will be available.

  • If you do not have a liability waiver on file from the past year, please either sign the Coastal Prairie Conservancy waiver online or bring a printed and signed Coastal Prairie Conservancy liability waiver. Copies will also be available onsite.

Seed collecting opportunities are combined with other Coastal Prairie Conservancy volunteer opportunities in one volunteer email. Please join our volunteer opportunities email list at this link; be sure to check the volunteer box. After joining that list, if you would like to be placed on the seed collecting email list to be notified of impromptu trips like this, please send your email address to Lshen@coastalprairieconservancy.org.

As seed collecting trips are scheduled, they are added to the RSVP form. Check this link for upcoming seed collecting trips and updates to scheduled trips.
